Hairspray and Gel. Lots of it. Also, open pins (not flat ones) are better.

I never wash my hair right before a competition, otherwise it won't go into a bun nicely. I also flatiron my hair to make it thinner (this is good if you have thick, straight hair. My curly-haired friends seem to have no problem getting their hair into pretty buns).

Also, practice Smile I wore RG/Skating buns to school regularly so I could practice doing them.

Yeah, practice makes perfect.

Using hair nets is a must too if you want a bun to hold for a long time (I've sometimes forgotten about mine and slept with it. Sleep Still held very well in the morning).

Doing your bun straight out of the shower works too, because damp hair holds well, but it usually pulls terribly too.
Flattening your bun with a wall sometimes help too, but if you have to do that, it might mean that it was less then perfect to begin with...

Kind of a weird trick I figured out recently, but I have long thick hair that is impossible to make a small, cute bun with, so I tie my ponytail into a knot, then pin the knot into place. It's not a small bun, but it's pretty flat to the head and holds really well. It also looks pretty Smile

Is you hair very thick/long? I can't do the donut bun as it ends up being much too bulky because of my hair length and thickness... Neutral

Actually my hair is not long , it's on my shoulders , and it's medium , not so thick and not so thin , if you have troubles because of the left parts after that you put that daughnut , you can braid them like here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEUzmmQQnqo Wink
And here is another tutorial with a girl who has very long hair : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2avdYN7Ojxc

I believe I saw a gymnast doing that braid thing once but I can't remember who Confused
