Canada=Hockey. Everyone plays hockey at some point in their life unless they're like me and refuse to conform to social norms. I really hate hockey.

Figure Skating is pretty big here too, especially because of olympians Joannie Rochette, Patrick Chan, and Virtue and Moir.

Everyone seems to play soccer as well, but I never liked it. I quit after they tried to make me play goalie. Basketball and Volleyball are also popular in school, and curling is gaining popularity.

Gymnastics is the most unrepresented, disrespected sport in Canada. It's horrible. I said that I do RG and everyone always says "What? Like with the bars and the rings?" On Wall Bash

I saw Patrick Chan and Virtue and Moir last yeat at All That Ice Show!!
Patrick did clean 3A which was very very impressive, and Virtue and Moir did gala to latin music. Audience loved them Smile Hope they'd come again this year!

In the Netherlands, most popular sports are more or less soccer/association football, tennis, hockey, swimming and speed skating, that receives the media attention mostly. When we talk about gymnastics, it is mostly artistic gymnastics which is quite known, although most people recognize rhythmic gymnastics (being associated with "the ribbon and the hoop with fast paced routines they cannot even dare to copy that").

However, the most popular sports, measured in official members in 2010 - so this does NOT include recreational sporters, who are not listed or affiliated with a team or club, were:

1. Association Football (i.e. Soccer) - > 1200000
2. Tennis -> 700000
3. Golf -> 350000
4. Gymnastics (including ALL disciplines) -> 255000 (they have lost 18000 members since 2008!!)
5. Hockey -> 227000
6. Equestrian -> 212000
7. Swimming/Aquatics -> 141000
8. Athletics -> 134000
9. Volleyball -> 126000
10. Bridge ( Stupid Stupid ) -> 116000
11. Korfball -> 100000
12. Skiing -> 97000
13. Aquatics (other) -> 94000
14. Speed skating/figure skating/short track -> 73000
15. Judo -> 61000

This more or less reflects the media attention in the Netherlands, with exception of Swimming and Speed Skating --> since only a dozen athletes are very skilled, usually all of the media attention gets to these sports, while there are not that many people practising the sport...

For the Dutchies among us, you can check the source right here.

In Brazil, of course football/soccer.

Then, I think volleyball, basketball, Formule 1, swimming, everyhting but RG. Mr. Green

Even artistic gymnastics is more popular than RG. But when I talk to people I know that I love RG they say: "oh, I love it too. It isn't that sport with the ribbon? oh, it is so beautiful".

I actually like soccer but it is ridiculous because here people just talk about soccer. The others sports are in a second place...

Whatever popularity hockey may have previously had in the US is really declining right now because of the lockout. Hockey used to be one of the big four along with (American) football, baseball, and basketball, but it has lost much of its mainstream popularity.

Football is the most popular sport in the Netherlands, but I don't like football.

And rhythmic gymnastic is perhaps the most unknown sport in my country Smile
