Hello everyone!
I was hoping to compile a list of elite gymnasts who were forced to retire due to injury. How many were due to back injuries, I wonder? Sad

Teodora Alexandrova always had a bad back and I think that was why she retired.

Karolina Sevastyanova retired due to leg injuries.

Actually it wasn't her feet injury at the end. She came back to sport after that - she retired after a knee injury.

No it was her shoulder until after the Sofia World Cup, she injured her knee and had to get surgery.

Regina Sergeeva (gymnast in German group) Sad

She had bad luck with injuries in her career. One injury right before London Olympics 2012.
Regina retired because of chronic foot problems and also knee problems.

viddy I am curoius often by your question too, and especially the back. Though I think that the problems often can occur later.

I have a vague memory of learning that Olesia Manuilova retired from an injury (maybe back??) as did Alexandra Ermakova (also maybe back??)

It was also mentioned recently that Anastasia Kisse retired having had back surgery- though in what capacity I am not certain. Said somewhere she now lives in London.

And also how could I forget... Dominika Cervenkova. That was fairly publicized on this website a few years ago.

I know it's especially difficult for many retiring artistic and rhythmic gymnasts, dancers, figure and dance skaters as flexibility lasts so much longer than muscle strength, power, and endurance leading to further problems.

I'm glad that the early 2000s COP with extreme back flexibility is not favoured but it hasn't been replaced by more strength-based skills (turning or switching leg leaps, ronde de jambe balances, etc) but with just devalued flex skills or completely removed extreme flexibility skills (deep double ring jump).

I think it's positive that we have some of the most elite gymnasts performing in galas and some transfering to AGG or Gymnaestradas. Perhaps there should be a bigger support system for athletes before they injury themselves or when they are in rehab for their injuries, such as being part of an aesthetic group in a gala? Just an idea but I'm sure there are many ideas out there!
