Which is your favourite gymnast to have been in the limelight for just a short time?
For me it's most definitely Teodora Pallidou. She really only competed in Worlds 2003, Olympics 2004 and Euros 2005. She was one of my favourite gymnasts
I think it's a big shame her carreer was so short, but I heard she had psychological issues from the pressure after Athens. She was just 17 when she retired!

Another greek that I also adored was Olga Nikolaidou. She looked great in 2002 Euros, but never really made an impact in 2003 and 2004 and later joined the group. I really wish she had kept on the development after Granada 2002 because she really seemed to be a star in the making (at just 15 years of age).

Ah, yes, Kurilskaya But at least she was well known from 2001 to 2006, even if only 3 of those years were as seniors. But there's just something about her carreer that is so anticlimatic, just so much unfulfilled promise. A real shame! _________________ And those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music |

My favourite gymnast who had a shortlived fame, and in fact never got the fame she, in my opinion, deserved, is Maria Gateva. Right after her, Mila Marinova.
This is what grace IS incarnated by Maria Gateva:

And here is a masterpiece ball routine (Mila Marinova):

definitely Mila Marinova (that ball routine was one of my favourites!). Also Larissa Medvedeva from Russia. More recently, I would say Marina Shpekht _________________ "The world is divided into two classes - those who believe the incredible, and those who do the improbable." --Oscar Wilde |

Wow, that ball routine of Marinova's was absolutely beautiful! I'd never even seen her before, barely heard her name. Too bad she wasn't a star for long!

The Russian gymnast Anna Chichova who was 3rd in 1995 Junior Europeans, as a senior she was really beautiful but I suppose she just wasn't one of Viner's "chouchoutes". _________________ Jon |

Zornika Kalenska of Bulgaria ( 1991 Junior European Champion)
Elizabeth Koleva of Bulgaria (1987 Junior European Champion & 1988 Co-European Champion)
Natalia Lipkovskaya of Russia (1997 Hoop World champion)
The above gymnasts all had short Elite careers in RSG & I would have liked to have seen more of them. |
