I've heard that Danish is one of the languages where you can't know how to pronounce a word by looking at it. Also, their number system is complicated.

English is my native language. I've been learning Spanish in school, but have a very hard time understanding spoken Spanish. I need to watch more Spanish language television to understand better.

Once the next school year begins, I will start learning American Sign Language.

Hi! Yes, it's an old topic, but can talking about languages really get old?
So...I speak English, but it's my second language. I happen to be French, because my ancestors who came in Canada were French, and because half my family is directly from France.

In Canada, we have 2 official languages: English and French. As in my part of the country most families speak French, children learn English at school from early grade school to college. I don't think we could go to universities without understanding it: lots of textbooks in English then. I don't know how it works in English communities.

Maybe Canada and Belgium have this in common? Some people here really don't seem to try to understand each others...which I find sad...I'm happy that forums exists! I like learning. That's how I end up understanding some Dutch, Swedish and German.

Does anybody speaks Afrikaans here? Zita

I am from South Africa! Yes I speak Afrikaans as I grew up with it on TV and also learned it from 7 years until I finished school. In South Africa you have to learn two of the 11 official languages. I am German (my dad) and English. I am fluent in English, German and Afrikaans. I have studied some French so I can speak but at a very low level and I am (when I have time) trying to learn Russian! Oh I can also speak a few words of Zulu which I learned in Junior school but I have forgotten most of it. I am interested to know, how similar are Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian (if that is what their language is called) and Bulgarian? Will I be able to understand them if I know Russian?
