My mother tongue is English. I have been learning french since i was 10, and spanish since i was 12. Im dropping out of french (as we can only pick out of french or spanish at school and i find spanish easier) and im also learning russian. I like to speak a mixture of english and russian, as i mainly speak russian to my friend who also is learning russian. In the future i would love to learn Polish!

I think it's a bit like russian : the most difficult is to learn the letter, but after I think the rest is easier

For me it's been no problem learning the cyrillic alphabet on my own... so maybe I'll find it pretty easy to learn the language (in school)! Very Happy

The problem in Chinese is that there are no letters. When you learn Russian or Greek, you learn the alphabet first - in Chinese you learn the sounds of pinyin (the way Chinese is written with western alphabet), the types of tildes, and then you begin learning words and basic structures. Each word has its own symbol (I don't remember the name in Chinese for those symbols).

I don't know yet about the systems that were used in the creation of the symbols. I just know that one of the sources is visual - they represented the word 'sun' as a circle with a dot in the middle before, but now it's evolved into a symbol that has two squares, one on top of another (or a long vertical rectangle that is divided by a horizontal line in the middle). Perhaps there is an easier way to know what a symbol means without having to memorise its meaning first, but, so far, it's only memorisation of words in my class. Hehe.

Perhaps someone who speaks Chinese can tell us?

You know Chinese language pretty well Angel
The creation of Chinese words is quite complicated, not every Chinese understands that. As you have mentioned, the "pictogram" as shown at wikipedia. For example, this picture( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/47/Character_Shan_Oracle.png ) is a mountain, for mountain in Chinese, is 山, pretty much like the mountain of the picture. "Simple ideograms", that is easy to understand. like 1, 2, 3 in Chinese is 一, 二, 三respectively. As you can see, if there are 3 horizontal lines in the word, it means 3. (from 4 onwards, it is different) Razz
And " Ideogrammic compounds",let me give an example. 木=wood, wood comes from trees. Grove has few trees when comparing with forest. So, 林(2x木= grove, )森(3x木= forest). actually, 森林 means forest. Okay, I think it is enough for basic understanding. It is hard and confusing for people to understand, I know. Yes, it is hard, but trust me, learning Chinese is so much fun, for those who are learning or interested in this language, go ahead and enjoy! Mr. Green

BTW, I speak Mandarin, Cantonese, English and a little bit German. =)

It helps a lot for those who are interested in words creation

Spanish is on my next-to-learn list. Although being in Canada I'm really suppose to learn some French? Besides this, after almost 7 years I'm still kindergarten level with my fiancee's mother language Romanian (but she prefers to talk to her parents in English anyways, so no pressure it seems.) Wink
