Ok,

so, i believe many people want the rope to be kept in competition and don't want a scarf as competition material. Some time ago there was the idea of writing a letter. As nobody did give one yet on the forum, i believe we should start one.

First thing to do is making some very good arguments why rope should be kept and why scarf is not good for RG.
The idea is that everybody can write pro's for the rope and contra's for the scarf in this topic.

Secondly, somebody good at writing letters, can "easily" make a letter out of our arguments.

So, please answer this questions:
1) why should rope be kept in competition
2) why we don't want a scarf or flag in competition

(if you think another point has to be made, write it also down)

Every now and then, i will put the answers in this topic, so we can easily collect everything.

Every answer in this topic that is not answering the 2 questions above, will be removed in this topic. This topic has to stay clean for pro's and contra's.

Question 1:
the FIG has said that this aparatuss isn't visible on tv but that is simply not true the rope is a great aparatuss and we don't want to have a other aparatuss in RG.
You can do multiple things with it and thats what it makes so interesting, rope isn't one of my favourite apratuss to work with but absolutly one to watch.

Question 2:
A simple reason why we don't want a scarf or flag in RG is first of all we don't want to make RG a circus act and second the only things you can do is to simply wave with them and maybe only throwing and catching but you can't do any risks with it for example with a rope you can take more risks then with a scarf or a flag

1) why should rope be kept in competition

- fig wants to delete the rope from senior programs, so I guess in junior competitions there are no injuries because of this aparatus and rope in tv is clearly visible? please, fig, the reasons you gave us just can't be serious...

- I think it's the matter of the organisers to take care about the "visibility" of the aparatus (maybe plain background like in Mie 2009 WCH? guess what! there was no problem with seeing the rope!), it doesn't make any sense to change the sport itself to make it more "visible"

- even if rope wasn't visible in tv, so is that the reason that rg is not so popular? NO! inventing other stuff just makes this sport a circus

2) why we don't want a scarf or flag in competition

- it's just ridiculous idea! what fig will discover in next 50 years time? toothbrush? frying pan? pants?

- with such things RG will look more like a circus, many people now don't believe that RG is a sport and fig is doing everything to show them they're rigth... :/

1) why should rope be kept in competition

Because the accusations of this apparatus being dangerous for the gymnasts is fake, if it's that dangerous, why keeping it for the juniors, whose health is more fragile than the senior gymnasts?

If there's too many jumps in rope, then let's decrease the number of compulsory jumps, that's a code of points problem, NOT an apparatus one! A rope is neutral, what can be a problem is what we make of it!

Because many past champions showed us that rope IS exiting, impressive and displays the gymnast strength.

If the problem is "Rope can't be seen on TV", then let's forbid dark colored ropes! In Thiais the background is dark, and when a gymnast uses a yellow rope, we DO see it !

2) why we don't want a scarf or flag in competition

Because that would be meaning going back, we are always trying to show everyone that RG IS a sport, and a difficult one. Remember that flags and scarves have been deleted from competition ages ago to give RG more credbility what if those apparatus used at the vey begining of the sport are back ? What credibility RG would have? We will be mocked at ! (and this time they might be right)

1) Rope has been a part of this sport since it started, it would destroy the meaning of the sport to do so.

In any sport, there are bound to be injuries.

Ropes are quite difficult to handle.

Rope CAN be seen on TV, tell the cameramen to do their job properly!

2) A scarf or a flag is NOT a good idea at all because they are quite simple to handle and are not dynamic enough to create interesting routines.

Scarves hang in the air, we could do a whole routine without touching the scarf!

We're trying to keep this as a sport, if you add a scarf or a flag it becomes an amateur dance show.

1) why should rope be kept in competition

- Rope is an apparatus used from the beginning of this sport
- Rope is a dynamic apparatus that could be thrown in the air and catched

2) why we don't want a scarf or flag in competition

- scaves cannot be thrown in the air
- flags will make this sport looks like a circus and flags , we can't do anything with it like illusions .. etc

1-

Increasing jumps in ball and ribbon is contradictor with the hypotetic micro-traumas reason. This year they've become a compulsory group in the four apparatus, and there isn't a higher incidence of injuries among top gymnasts (who train the most).

2-

using the apparatus as a decoration is against rg statements, so a scarf doesn't satisfy rg requirements in any way. All this new apparatus circus is a excuse to introduce a free hands routine, which neither offers a valid interaction apparatus-gymnast. This bunch of changes, not made for sportive reasons, will make rg look less a serious sport, and that will decrease even more the sponsorships interest.

I actually am not against a scarf. A routine with a scarf would almost be as a routine without apparatus. And I am sure that we could see great things by senior gymnasts. Just think at how many nice scarf routines we see in gala shows.

Rope is one of the most interesting and dynamic apparatus to watch. Part of the beauty of rhythmic gymnastics is the variety between routines: we have the elegance of the ball and ribbon and the fast routines you see with ropes and clubs.
It is also not fair to only remove rope for seniors who now have to do the same apparatus every single year, especially for people who join the sport later in life and now won't get to experience using different combinations of apparatus.

We shouldn't introduce a new apparatus like a scarf or flag because replacing rope with one of them would generally spoil things: it would be like removing the beam from artistic gymnastics and changing it to a pole. The apparatus have stayed the same right from RG's beginnings and there is no good reason to take out a perfectly good apparatus so we can have more dancing and waving stuff about.

1. Fluorescent ropes can be seen perfectly (e.g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNmVMo_JwsU&playnext=1&videos=TuDAffVrTcg) so we should just keep to fluorescent colours then there'd be no problem.

2. A scarf or a flag would look embarrassing and would be too hard to handle. End of.

1) why should rope be kept in competition
In 2002 was the first time I saw rhytmic gymnastics.I just fell in love in this sport. At that time I didn't have any equipment,so I used a skipping rope for little kids. Very Happy But that changed soon.My first apparatus was rope.I liked it so much.At that time was my fave apparatus.Rope is so creative apparatus, you can do so many things with it,like catches, throws and also your imagine moves which are giving you more points. Why has to be dissabled from the sport??

2) why we don't want a scarf or flag in competition
what a scarf or flag?? Watching why?it would be so boring to watch. Also a flag.Even worse. Confused

I want to keep the rope!!!!

Also! The rope is the easiest piece to get hold of as all the other are very specialised and can be difficult to find for gymnasts with little money and/or resources.

In my opinion today is really important promoted rhythmic gymnastic like a hard high level sport. Rope is apparatus that everybody associate with sport , also ball and hoop. Ribbon and clubs are more artistic equipment and does not associate with sport in general population. If we will have flag/scarf instead rope, so artistic versus sport will be not 2:3, but 3:2. So people who express opinion that rhythmic is a dance and not a sport and especially an Olympic one, will have more arguments and facts to justify their opinion.

I have tried my best to keep it as short as I could!

1) Why should rope be kept in competition:
The reasons given by the FIG do not make any logical sense as the rope is still being used by Juniors and if the rope was really that ‘bad’ for one’s health it should logically only be reserved for Seniors when their body is the most developed as the body develops the most when one competes as a Junior.
The same/ similar leaps are performed for all other apparatus thus there would be a similar ‘problem’ with those apparatus.
Yes, the rope can be difficult to see at times, but these instances are limited as one can mostly see the rope- footage of any Olympics will prove this. The problem why the rope is sometimes not as visible is due to the poor lighting in the sports hall or the type of rope used such as a dark coloured rope in a poorly lit hall or a fluorescent rope in a brightly lit hall.
Rope is unmistakably one of the most difficult apparatus as it is not as ‘solid’ as the other apparatus. By taking this apparatus away, one will be making the sport seem ‘easier’. Rope has also been one of the first apparatus to be used in the sport and has a long history with the sport. Many associate rope with the sport.
Furthermore, leaps are considered to be a difficult element, should the rope be removed, are the FIG going to spend more time and money on rewriting the code of points so that leaps can be used as crucial elements for the other apparatus.

2) Why we don't want a scarf or flag in competition:
This exact federation removed the scarf many years ago in order to increase the difficulty of the sport. Scarves and flags are already used in the galas, the galas are meant for fun NOT for competition.
Rhythmic Gymnastics needs ‘signature’ apparatus to make it easily distinguishable from other forms of gymnastics. If we use scarves and flags it will make it look like we are part of the circus or drum majorettes. Should the apparatus be turned into a floor exercise for seniors, this will confuse us with acrobatics (as far I know, the FIG still don’t recognise solo acrobatic routines as an Olympic sport?!).

Possible solutions:
Gymnasts should use ropes which match the ‘lighting’ of the respective hall.
Should leaps really cause trauma to the feet of the gymnasts, more padding should be used under the mats.
Send out a questionnaire to all member gyms around the world and to the media and ask them to rate their favourite apparatus.

In closing, the FIG seriously need to consider the future, long-term implications of this decision such as the media deciding that the sport especially scarves are ‘not sporty or difficult’ enough to bother covering the events anyway. They should also consider the amount of time and money they will have to spend on re-writing the code of points AGAIN!!

1. WHY ROPE SHOULD BE KEPT IN RG:

IT IS A FUNDEMENTAL ASPECT OF THE SPORT!!!!
It is like taking away the balance beam in women's artistic gymnastics!!!

You simply can not imagine artistic gymnastics without a beam or a pommel horse or still rings or floor.

Therefore, I simply can not imagine rhythmic gymnastics without the rope.
It is the most versatile and dynamic equipment if choreographed properly.

FIG SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO STOP THIS NONSENSE.

I hope that if they see this comparison of taking away the balance beam, then they will realize how dumb of a decision is being made.

2. Flags and scarves are for galas, exhibitions, circuses, marching band.
Rhythmic gymnastics is an Olympic Sport, not some stage show at the theater or a cheerleading show at a high school football game.

I can not even believe that the visibility on TV issue was even raised.

FIRST, let's get rhythmic gymnastics to be broadcast more on television period.
After, you have it broadcast in every country that participates in the World Championships, you can discuss whether or not the rope is visible.

And since when do we do this sport for ratings???
It's an olympic sport, not an MTV reality show.
The rope is clearly visible and FIG knows it. They are just trying to come up with a lame excuse to mess up this sport!!!

If you can not tell, I am very angry! Motz On Wall Bash Evil or Very Mad Shocked Blub
