And Bezzoubenko's Shocked Shocked Shocked

She throw away the Olympics with literally her last move.

1:25 and she was an Olympian, 1:30 and she wasn't.

Oh God.

Don't you lose 0.5 or something for taking the reserve ball?
It's easy to think when chasing things you are just about to get them but they keep on going Very Happy
Someone said Alyabyeva was never quite the same after she was embarrassed in the same way in 2011 Worlds with hoop when there was no reserve apparatus. *sigh*

Oh my goodness.

These Nazarenkova Bezzoubenko kind of images stay stuck in the head. Like Batyrchina in Atlanta, Karpenko/Khorkina/Zamolodchikova in Sidney or Viktoria Komova in London. I don't think I'll ever get over those. Quiet karpenkos puzzled look is haunting.

Why can they all qualify and win medals, some kind of Oprah Winfreys Olympics Blub Rolling Eyes and why am i singing Eminem's loose yourself" in my head Rolling Eyes .

I think this would be a good video for teaching crisis technique to the gymnast: if you are on an elevated podium and the apparatus rolls down, GO FOR THE RESERVE, don't chase your own!

Puzzling mistake!

Can somebody please with a stable COP knowledge calculate how much deduction it was to get the backup as and how much possible deduction was what she actually did?

Well...

apparatus out of bound = 0.300
gymnast out of bound = 0.300
(0.600)

Use of replacement apparatus = 0.300
(0.300)

Since she didn't catch the ball either, she'd lose her difficulty value, AND on her execution, she loses at least 0.700 as she needs to travel more than 2 steps to retrieve it (literally: Loss and retrieval after a large travelling (3 or more steps) or outside the floor area – 0.70). If she'd pick up a replacement, she'd still lose 0.700 on her E mark, so there's no difference is that.

However, she probably:
- lost additional marks based on interruption (unity) of the routine, and/or:
- she might had to skip a difficulty of some sort.

So yeah, that was a canonized effect. She should have definitely picked up the spare apparatus as that would have at least saved 0.300. Yet highly likely she didn't need to skip a part of her routine which proved to be extremely costly in her case.

Ultimately, her D score was 7.900 and her E score was 7.600. She indeed got a penalty of 0.600 for apparatus and gymnast leaving the floor area.

If it wasn't for Serdyukova, she only needed 0.548 to beat Berezko, who qualified in last. To beat Serdyukova, she needed at least 1.333 higher... so 16.233 was her minimum score for ball (if all of her other scores would still stand). I think that even if she would elect to pick up the spare ball, she still came in short to beat her compatriot.

Thank you, Justin! I was being lazy Mr. Green

My estimate was she probably lost about half point more with this solution, a lot of time went by!

It's not so simple to make decisions like this on the hoof with limited time with everything going on, when you are not expecting it to happen. For a start, think how many tennis players have to track a ball for nearly a second before they realise it's going out of bounds. This boundary drop is the kind of thing a trainer should be reminding a gymnast about beforehand so they already conscious of what to do.
First she realises she's losing the ball and just knows she has to get after it. It's only after she's begun to chase it over that 2m of carpet that she will really know how fast it's going, and the area beyond the carpet is so narrow there's hardly time to think if you haven't thought it through in advance- 1.5m is nothing. By that time she was already thinking of just how to tackle the edge without falling down it, in single-minded pursuit mode.
In many situations where to the observer it seems obvious what to do, in the situation itself things are broken down into several distracting steps where the outcome is not known and is close to overloading the person in the middle of it.
I am guessing everybody was wound up to so tight a point for that Olympic place this boundary was just a little detail that escaped their attention.

Yes, that's right of course. I don't know if they were told of the dangers of the elevated floor.

And of course it's also much more easy to spot the correct solution from the outside!

As always, Gergely is king of the gracious responders. I find the following a bit much though:

So yeah, that was a canonized effect.

Saint Bessonova I could venerate, Sister Pivotdinova I could pay homage to, Goddess Maksy I could even worship, but I feel to canonise to sainthood the hardest-working face of RG for chasing balls beyond the call of duty is going a bit far. After all, she needs to become a Servant of God, Venerable and then Blessed first.
Are you thinking of Snooker, Justin? Wink
