hello!

i would like to know what and how much the top gymnasts eat. i read in those scandal topics a bit about it, but i would like to know more about it, from different parts of the world. how is it in Russia, Ukraine, Spain, Argentina ... everywhere.

i would also like to point out that eating nothing in the morning and a meal in the evening is the worst type of diet and far from healthy.

*btw diet doesn't mean "what you eat when you want to lose weight" but "what you eat" (research is done on i.e. Lynx diet, trying to find out what they eat) Smile. this diet term has become misunderstood since N America has been getting obese.

thanks for the info
k

i am not from any of those countries, but i am an elite rhythmic gymnast. i think when gymnasts live in these training camps, it is not the gymnast's desicion what they eat, as they are monitored all the time, but MANY elite gymnasts still live with their families and have a bit more control over what they eat. i think it is ideal for a gymnast to eat healthy, the main word being EAT, but out of all the gymnasts i have meet all over the world, i have never meet one that has healthy eating habits, which is sad to say.
i dont want to say what country they are from (obviously one of the eastern european countries), but at one competition i went to a few years ago and all the gymnasts stayed in the same hotel and ate together, i noticed this country only ate for example 3 grapes or half an apple for breakfast when they were eating with their coach, but later that day i saw the same gymnasts going and buying 2 shopping bags full of candy and sweets from a near by shop when their coach was out. i didnt see them eat it but i suspect they threw it up afterwards (it was a day before the competition). note that the girls i am talking about are world champions.
so you can see that this controlling of the diet by a coach is not very healthy at all, but it is widely done in the sports world.
gymnasts who control their own diets still feel great pressure, such as myself. if you are a bit bigger than every other gymnst at the comps then you want to blend in, which can lead to a number of things. if you have a good gymnast body without restricting your diet you take advantage of this and eat as much as you want, which of course is not nutritional. i try to keep to a healthy diet (everything in moderation) but as most know this is harder than it sounds
i am only talkning from my life experiences, and i have no nutritional training whatsoever. i hope somewhere in there i answered your question...... Rolling Eyes

Thanks for all your words... you made me very happy Very Happy

Well, the food in RG is very complicated...but what I think is that you can eat "healtly ,normal and don´t be hungry " being in shape for the sport.
I know about some gymnasts...

Betty: she has a normal diet,Stella permits her to eat what she wants,of course, she doesn´t eat evryday chocolates but she has three food "healtly" at day and sometimes she can take sweets...and you can see Betty is thin and always looks in shape.

Moni: Simona doesn´t eat as Betty does, but Marietta is not pressuring her all the time... Simona loves sweets but she knows what she has to do. At morning Simona for breakfast normally takes fruits,te and honey. For lunch she takes salad and for dinner depends....

Russians: Well,I was in Russia and rellay the junior team ate a lot! for breakfast they had everyday chocolate cereals with milk!!!
Kabaeva always had problems...she normally went to bed without dinner as well as Zarina Guizikova.

Sessina,Kapranova,Yussupova,Gurbanova eat what they want, for me too much! hehe for breackfast they take butter, croassants, milk with chocolate....for me is a lot for going to train, but well, maybe they´re used...and of course,I don´t know if they always do it.
In Udine I shared many time with Kapranova,Dinara and Gurbanova...for lunch and dinner they ate fish, salads, rice and olso they took spaguetti.

I don´t know very well about Anya and Natasha...but I think Anya is more carefully than Natasha...Maybe IH can talk us more Grin

Belarussians...Inna can eat what she wants, I was very surpried the first time I saw her!,she is really thin naturally,in few words...she is very lucky! hehe
I have seen her eating chocolates, ice cream in front of her coaches with out problems and before competitions Razz
Not the some for Vala and Sveta..... Confused

Almu eats normal too...very normal! I think Almu eats as me,I will tell you my diet leter,I am sorry but I don´t have much time Embarassed

I remember Teodora Alexandrova...she suffered a lot with the diet...she got weight easily and she spent a day with out eating.I don´t agree with this sistem.... because automatically gymnasts go and buy food "not healtly" outside,(as gorhythmic said).

I have seen "MANY TIMES" gymansts eating hidden and to me,it is not sport and you cannot be happy Crying or Very sad

Promise to tell about my diet in a day, just be patients Wink

I'm from Russia but I didnt start doing RG until I moved to New Zealand (sadly Crying or Very sad ).
But my mum (Whos also from Russia) told me a story:

when she was at a camp, there were young
(around 9, 10, 11 years old) gymnasts and what
they did every time before they ate is they weighted
them and if they put on weight more than what
they need to weight they would exclude something
from their meal wich would make up for it,
but nothing that major just something like bread
or that sort of thing.

So I think they (in Russia) manage younger
gymnasts when they dont really understand
whats good for them yet. But ofcourse they
still manage them (if they dont manage themselves)
when they get older.

There is a diet on Ira Chaschinas' website which she uses when
she needs to loose weight. I will translate it and post it here soon.

Hope this was useful Wink Wink

OK I'm back. Very Happy

What I got is that in Russia they know what
vitamin/mineral/etc. a sports person needs
(everyone, not only gymnasts). So whatever it
is they need the most, is what they feed them
(with all the other foods ofcourse!!!) and they dont
just use vitamin capsules to get it, they use the
food that has lots of that vitamin/mineral and
they will even ship it from other countries for them! Surprised

So here is Iras diet.

A week before a competition she eats everyday:
dark chocolate,a peice of black bread with red
caviar (with no butter), low calorie youghurt or frughurt,
a glass of kefir (its like what they call here 'youghurt on the go'
which is kind of like liquid yoghurt without flavouring),
a salad from tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley without any oil or mayonaise, freshly juiced fruit or vegetable juice.

--------------------------------------------------

It says that Ira keeps her weight under control without any diets
but every now and again she uses 'light fruity' diet:

BREAKFAST: glass freshly juiced pineapple or apple juice

LUNCH: Fruit salad (equal amounts of peices of pineapple, orange,
kiwi fruit, and skinless apples). And a glass of juice of one of those fruits.

DINNER: a glass of mineral water without gases and a green apple.

Staying on this diet for 5 - 7 days a self deciplined person can lose 3 - 5 kgs.

-----------------------------------------------------

Thats All Razz hope it was usefull too! Razz
